How I Unwind After A Stressful Week of Nursing

Posted by Kristen Salisbury on

Nursing can be an extremely challenging and emotionally taxing job. Every day is filled with high-pressure situations, long hours on our feet, and constant demands from patients and their families.

We give so much of ourselves to our patients that it can be hard to find time for self-care. That's why I wanted to share with you some of the ways I unwind and relax after a long week at work. These are the things that keep me going day after day, and I hope they'll be helpful to you too.

P.S - Make sure to take some time to look after YOU!

My top activities to relax and take some time to care for myself:

  • Meditating
  • Yoga,
  • Journaling
  • Reading
  • Watching Netflix shows
  • Spending time with family and friends
  • Dance parties in my living room
  • Relaxing bubble baths!!
  • Traveling the world

Meditating

One of my go-to relaxation techniques is meditation. I find that even just 5-10 minutes of mindful breathing can help me feel more centered and calm. There are many free meditation apps and videos available online, so you can try different styles and find what works for you.

Yoga

Another great way to release tension and boost your mood is through yoga. You don't need to be a pro to enjoy the benefits of yoga - even simple stretches and poses can help you feel more relaxed and refreshed. I love following yoga videos on YouTube, and there are many free resources available for all levels.

Journaling

Sometimes, it can be hard to process all the emotions and thoughts that come with being a nurse. That's why journaling can be a powerful tool for self-reflection and stress relief. Whether you prefer writing by hand or typing on a computer, take a few minutes to jot down your feelings and experiences. It can help you gain perspective and clarity.

Reading

When I need a break from the demands of work, I love escaping into a good book. Reading can transport you to different worlds and help you forget about your worries for a little while. Whether you prefer fiction or nonfiction, there's a book out there for everyone.

Netflix Shows

There's nothing like getting lost in a good show or movie on Netflix. It's a great way to unwind and take your mind off work. Whether you prefer dramas, comedies, or documentaries, there's always something new to discover.

Spending Time with Family and Friends

After a long week, sometimes all you need is some quality time with your loved ones. Whether it's going out for dinner, having a game night at home, or just chatting on the phone, spending time with family and friends can be a great way to recharge your batteries.

Dance Parties in My Living Room

Another fun way to let loose and forget about work is by having a dance party in your living room! Put on some upbeat music and dance like nobody's watching. It's a great way to get your heart rate up and boost your mood.

Relaxing Bubble Baths

Finally, one of my favorite ways to unwind is by taking a relaxing bubble bath. Add some candles, essential oils, or your favorite bath salts, and let yourself sink into the warm water. It's a great way to soothe sore muscles and calm your mind.

Travel!

I know how important it is to take time to unwind and recharge. So, I make sure to get the most out of my PTO each year and travel the world, refresh, make new connections, and experience new things.

Traveling is one of my greatest passions in life. It's an opportunity to explore new cultures, try new foods, and see the world through a different lens.

Some of my favorite travel experiences include exploring the islands of Hawaii and the Bahamas, hiking through the majestic mountains of Switzerland, and traversing all over Europe.

Next stop? Bali!

Bali Retreat

In October this year, I will be hosting my first-ever Nursing Retreat in Bali and I am so excited!

This beautiful island offers the perfect combination of relaxation and adventure, with its serene beaches, lush rice paddies, and vibrant culture. It's the perfect place to disconnect from the stresses of everyday life and reconnect with yourself.

I can't wait to share this incredible experience with other like-minded travelers who are looking for a meaningful and rejuvenating escape.
